Dunmore, EIC

I. Theme

All writing must be of a pro-Southern bend, this is fundamentally a magazine for Heritage Southerners.

Keeping with this, if you have a well-researched article on the movement of drugs along intercoastal waterways and it does not primarily mention the Southeastern United States, please send it elsewhere. However, if your article is about the movement of drugs from New Orleans to St. Louis via the Mississippi River, we would love to have it.

II. Word Count

As a rule of thumb, we would like all writing to be at least 1,000 words. We are willing to publish shorter pieces, but they will be considered case by case.

There is NO HARD WORD LIMIT, however, if your piece is over 10,000 words it will be broken up into multiple parts for readability.

III. Exclusivity

Submissions must not be published elsewhere. In other words, once you commit to publishing your writing with us, its home will be here at “Virginia Gentry” from that point on.*

You will always receive full writing credit as the author, and if you are unhappy with the way your writing was edited or formatted, please reach out and we will do everything we can to correct it. In addition to that, we will be more than happy to link all of your relevant information and social media.

If you have a SubStack we will also add you as a guest author, which will link the piece to your account, and if you would like to have the piece on your account directly we would ask that you “re-stack” it rather than publish the piece a second time on your account.

We are very aware that we are a small publication, and the nature of SubStack is very informal, but we here at “Virginia Gentry” have aspirations of being a serious publication in the future, and as such we ask you to please respect these policies.

If anything here makes you uncomfortable to publish with us, it may be better to publish your writing elsewhere.

Note* Exceptions to this rule will only be made for old articles, essays, and fiction that the editorial team has gained permission from the author/owner of the work to re-publish in “Virginia Gentry”.

IV. Political Essays

We will publish anything thought-provoking, so long as it has a Southern focus. The politics of “Virginia Gentry” could be described as Paleo-Conservative after the tradition of men like Pat Buchanan. Although, if you wish to present another perspective we are not opposed to publishing you, so long as the editorial team approves.

Place cite all sources in Chicago style.

V. Historical Essays

Historical essays can be about any topic, so long as it has a Southern focus. Feel free to write about any point in Southern history.

Place cite all sources in Chicago style.

VI. Fiction

The prose must be good. We have editors, but we are not miracle workers. If your fiction writing isn’t of a salvageable quality it will be rejected.

VII. Pseudonyms

We will publish your work under any name you would like us to so long as it is respectable. In other words, if you have a pseudonym like “Magatron” or “Troon Destroyer”, we will supply you with a respectable nom de plume. However, we will still link all of your media and other relevant information.

When we publish physical editions of the magazine, this policy is subject to change.

VIII. Submission Format

Please send your writing in a Word Doc, Google Doc, or PDF.

IX. Accompanying Images

Images or graphics are encouraged but all images must be owned by you or exist in the public domain.
